What Is NDI|HX and Why Does It Matter?

NDI — Network Device Interface — is a royalty-free software standard developed by NewTek (now Vizrt) that enables video-enabled devices to identify and communicate with one another over a standard IP network. Instead of running dedicated SDI or HDMI cables from each camera position to a central switcher, NDI allows cameras, switchers, graphics systems, recording software, and streaming encoders to share video, audio, and metadata across a regular Ethernet infrastructure.

NDI|HX is the compressed variant of the full NDI standard, engineered for environments where bandwidth constraints or long cable runs make uncompressed transport impractical. NDI|HX uses H.264 or H.265 encoding to deliver broadcast-quality, low-latency video at significantly reduced bit rates — making it well suited for multi-camera productions, remote contribution workflows, campus-wide video distribution, and any environment where many cameras need to share the same network infrastructure without saturating it.

One cable does it all: With PoE+ (Power over Ethernet Plus) support, the HD-NDI-MINI requires a single standard Ethernet cable to carry video, audio control data, and camera power simultaneously. There is no separate power run, no SDI coax, no HDMI — just one cable from camera to switch.
